Why is my cat peeing on my boyfriends cloths?

My boyfriend and I have been living together for 3 years now. My 6 year old male (nuertered) cat has always taken a liking to him. They play together, lay together and sometimes the cat even grooms him by licking his hair! On the other hand the cat has been with me since he was a kitten, sleeps on my head, follows me everywhere and even tries to sleep in my boyfriends spot if I go to bed first! I recently noticed the cat "kneeding" at my boyfriends towel, purring and sleeping on it. Then one day I caught him peeing on it. Ever since then the cat actively seeks out his towels and clothing. Hes ever gone as far as jumping in his laundry basket to try and pee on his stuff. I dont understand why he started this behavior when the litter box is in the other room. It doesnt seem urgent like a UTI. Any ideas what could be causing him to do this?
