Why do left-wingers like to limit Americana (american culture) and degrade American optimism?

I don't do that, and I'm pretty far to the left. There comes a time when you need to be realistic, however. All the optimism in the world won't stop a speeding car from going off a foreseeable cliff. Would you knock the guy in the head for pointing out the cliff to you?
