Do I need a cage for a hamster?

One of my friends recently gave me their pet hamster as a present. The hamster is toilet trained (meaning that it uses this miniature litter box when it needs to go to the washroom) and is very lazy. I was wondering, would I NEED a cage for it? I have one, but I'd prefer not to use it considering they have a very strong oder (the cage).
